Middle Park’s Brian Macchione will wrestle for the state championship at 189 pounds in 3A on Saturday night after defeating Shay Hansen of Brush 3-1 in the semifinals at the Colorado High School State Wrestling Tournament on Friday night at the Pepsi Center in Denver.

Macchione is looking to become Middle Park’s first state champion since his brother Allen and Ben Cherrington won state titles in 2001.

West Grand’s Chase Hill battled Blake Bartlett of Peyton into the third period of their 2A 160-pound weight class semifinal before being pinned at 5:29. Hill now goes into the consolation bracket on Saturday morning.

Earlier Middle Park wrestlers Adam Visconti (103) and Brandon Strang (112) kept their hopes of placing alive with wins in the 3A consolation bracket. Visconti pinned Reece Alles of University at 2:29 in his match and Strang pinned Dalton Rupe of Hotchkiss at 3:55.

Both Panther wrestlers will return to the mat at 11 a.m. on Saturday in the third consolation round. Wins in those matches will secure a spot in the top six.
