Stephen Lee: Recall petition for the Hot Sulphur mayor, mean-spirited

To the Editor:

I have a few comments on the article in the paper about the recall petition for the Hot Sulphur mayor.

First, Hot Sulphur has just completed its 2012 Winter Carnival, which was a prime example of Community Spirit. Now we have a mean-spirited, negative, vindictive attempt to recall Hershal Deputy, the mayor of Hot Sulphur. None of the charges mentioned in the Sky-Hi News article have any validity.

A copier was purchased without town board approval? The purchase of the copier WAS approved by the Board. A town employee was improperly fired? No one has been fired since before 2010, and Deputy was re-elected mayor in 2010 unopposed.

Not everyone’s “pet project” has been enthusiastically embraced? Money is very tight in the town, and Hershal’s main thrust has been to fix the water system (and now the ailing water treatment plant).

So I am not sure why this situation has suddenly become “so intolerable” to quote Megan Carlson. I would suggest you call Hershal Deputy, the Mayor, and talk things over with him. I have always found him easy to approach and talk to.

Also, two of the recall petitioners, Lori Baumgardner and Summer Shuster, are running for trustee of the town of Hot Sulphur Springs. So Recall the Recall Petition, and be sure to vote in the general election on April 3 for a positive, forward looking Hot Sulphur Springs.
