April is National Earth Month, which is a great time for homeowners to make their homes more energy efficient.

Sustainable Grand is encouraging homeowners and businesses to take advantage of discounted home energy assessments to find out how to reduce their energy usage and greenhouse gas emissions.

These tests help residents identify ways to be more energy efficient and lower their energy bills. The assessments typically take three hours. Homeowners can also access rebates and incentives to make these assessments more affordable.

According to Sustainable Grand, local utility partners make this affordability possible. For example, Xcel energy provides a $200 rebate for homeowners who use gas and electric and Mountain Parks Electric provides a $250 credit for electric, gas and propane.

Lower income residents may even be eligible for a free weatherization assistance program. Income limits are $43,140 for a household of one and $61,560 for a household of four.

“Our goal is to support the community in becoming greener while keeping homes and businesses comfortable and cost-effective,” Helen Brown, executive director of Sustainable Grand wrote in an email.

What’s included in an assessment?

– Inspecting for air leaks in foundation, exterior walls, and openings such as windows and doors

– Checking energy loss-prone areas like the attic, basement and crawl spaces

– Conducting a blower door test with thermal imaging to assess air leakage

– Testing gas appliances for safety
