A garage fire in Tabernash earlier this week is still under investigation.

About 4 p.m. Monday, a 9-1-1 call came into the Grand County Sheriff’s dispatch center about a structural fire on County Road 8507. A non-attached garage next to a residence was on fire.

Fire trucks from East Grand Fire Department and Granby Fire Department rushed to the scene as well as units from Granby County Emergency Medical Services.

Also responding to the fire were Lt. Steve Holland, Deputy Terry Faulkner and Investigator Kim Wilken of the Grand County Sheriff’s Office.

The blaze destroyed the 2,800-square-foot garage. Also inside the garage was a Kenworth tractor trailer and antiques with a reported value of $30,000.

In an incident report, Deputy Faulkner said he spoke to the 20-year-old son of the residence and garage’s owner who explained he had been working in the garage that day. He had left the garage to go into the house to have lunch, but after 10 minutes he spotted smoke and flames coming from the building. He made the 9-1-1 call to the Sheriff’s Office.

The 20-year-old man said the garage was being heated that day by a wood stove, which was about two years old. No flammable fluids had been left open or recently used in the garage, he said.

Sheriff’s investigators Kim Wilken and Leo Piechocki are working the case.
