Tax help for seniors

GRANBY — The Grand County Council on Aging is pleased to announce a free tax-preparation service aimed at Grand County’s low and moderate-income taxpayers 60 and older. Volunteers from the AARP Foundation’s Tax-Aide Program will be at the Granby Community Center on Friday and Saturday, March 14-15 to assist taxpayers in electronically filing standard state and federal returns, ensuring speedier refunds. The Tax-Aide Program is designed for taxpayers who file Form 1040. More complicated returns – such as those involving depreciation or rental property – are beyond the scope of the service.

“It doesn’t take too long to run across someone who really needs that extra $300 they are saving by having their taxes done for free,” said John Meredith, the volunteer state coordinator for Tax-Aide. Meredith, along with a dedicated and knowledgeable team of tax preparers, has volunteered to travel from Colorado Springs to Granby for this two-day event, in order to help meet the needs of the Grand County community.

Taxpayers who plan to utilize this service should bring along the following documents:

•2012 Tax Return

•W2s and 1099 statements and other forms showing income from interest, dividends, capital gains, stock sales or Social Security

•Photo identification as well as Social Security cards for each person included on the return

•Receipts for medical and dental bills, prescriptions and insurance premiums

•Property tax and mortgage interest statements

•Receipts for charitable donations and other itemized deductions

•Mileage records for volunteer work or for travel to medical appointments

•Receipts for improvements, such as ramps and railings, to make a home safer for aging residents

•Bank routing number and account number for direct deposit of refunds.

The service is free, but appointments are necessary. Tax preparation appointments are available between 10:00 AM and 5:00 PM on Friday, March 14th and between 8:00 AM and 3:00 PM on Saturday, March 15th. Services will be offered at the Granby Community Center, located at 129 Third Street. Please call the Grand County Council on Aging at (970)887-3222 to schedule an appointment as space is limited.

The Grand County Council on Aging is a non-profit organization established in 1972 to assist Grand County seniors and disabled persons maintain their independence by giving a helping hand where needed. GCCA offers transportation services, recreation opportunities, support groups, senior fitness and educational classes.
