Telluride man dies in avalanche

Telluride, CO -A Telluride man became the state’s fifth avalanche fatality this snow season when he was killed today by a slide in a backcountry area off the Telluride ski area, authorities said.

Nathaniel Soules, 38, was skiing alone on U.S. Forest Service land in the Bear Creek area.

Two other people skiing in the area came across the slide and searched with an avalanche beacon before finding Soules’ body about 4 feet under the snow.

The San Miguel County Sheriff’s Department said Soules was wearing an avalanche airbag, which helps people caught in slides.

“The device was deployed but appeared to have been damaged,” the department stated this evening.
