The Book Float Competition

The Grand County Library District is holding its 13th annual Book Float Contest. This activity for elementary age children uses imagination and creativity as children craft a miniature display based on the theme of a favorite book. “We know spring break is around the corner and this is a perfect family activity involving books.” says Sue Luton, Branch Manager of Juniper Library in Grand Lake.

“The kids really express their love of reading and books in this project. The competition is so intriguing that we often have adults wanting to join in.”

The Rules

Decorate a shoe box (or other box of similar size) with a scene based on a favorite book or a character in a book. Label the entry with the title of the book, the author and your grade. Complete an application and waiver, available from any Grand County library branch. Then return the completed float and application to your closest branch between April 1 and 16.

Winners from each branch will be chosen in five categories: most creative, best use of materials, best interpretation, most colorful and the people’s choice 2016. All participants will receive a certificate of participation and each winner will receive a special prize. The traditional “float parties” are back this year and will be held for all participants the week of April 25. Check for party times at your library.

This year, everyone is invited to join in the judging. Come by the library the week of April 18, view the entries and cast a vote. Winners will be announced at the float parties.
