The Fraser Valley Metropolitan Recreation District will be awarded a Lottery Starburst Award for utilizing Lottery proceeds to build the playground, which encourages children to learn about the area’s rich heritage. The project was finished this summer with support from Lottery dollars including $155,500 from the Conservation Trust Fund (CTF) and a $97,835 grant from Great Outdoors Colorado (GOCO).

The award will be presented at the FVMRD board meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 27 at 5:30 pm.

Located at the Fraser Valley Sports Complex, the new playground replaced deteriorating and unsafe equipment with fully accessible ADA-compliant structures. The playground incorporates a historical theme, resembling the Old West look of Fraser in the 1880s. Buildings include a stagecoach, bank, jail, two-story schoolhouse with school bell, and a replica of the Fraser Mercantile – a historical building once visited by President Dwight Eisenhower. The project also pays homage to Ute Indian tribal history with a canoe, dream-catcher and teepee.

The Colorado Lottery Starburst Awards recognize excellence in the use of Lottery proceeds in community projects implemented to enhance a community’s environment.
