The term ‘socialism’ is being used pretty casually these days

To the Editor:

I am writing in response to Bill Hamilton’s piece, Election 2008: Will America go for socialism? in the Oct. 22 paper.

Hamilton’s article is all across the board and does not address one specific point; interestingly, he does not even address anything regarding socialism though the title would suggest this. To touch on that briefly, Barack Obama is not even close to being a socialist and that word is only being tossed around referring to Joe the Plumber and spreading the wealth. This was all taken out of context by the McCain campaign.

But this is not the reason I chose to write this letter. I felt compelled to speak out and get the facts straight regarding the Associated Press article on Louis Farrakhan on 19 Oct. To quote word by word from the article regarding the two hour speech Farrakhan made in Chicago on the 19th, “In the nearly two-hour speech, Farrakhan covered topics including immigration, public schools, violence and morality. He vaguely referred to the presidential election but did not specifically mention any candidates.” To translate this to avoid any confusion, it simply means he did not even mention Barack Obama by name.

The article also refers to a a speech in February made by Farrakhan in which he calls Barack Obama the “hope of the entire world”. Not once does he even suggest or mention Obama as “a new beginning for Islam.” This is a flat out distortion of the facts.

Please keep things honest, Mr. Hamilton.
