This week in history: Fire guts apartment, baseball season begins in Grand County

1 year ago: Grand County commissioner becomes executive director of Peak Health Alliance
On April 1, 2024, Peak Health Alliance announced the appointment of Richard Cimino as its new executive director. The alliance describes itself as a leading advocate for health care solutions in rural Colorado. Cimino is an elected member to the Grand County Board of Commissioners and had been serving on the Peak Health Alliance Board of Directors for four years. In addition, Cimino serves on the Colorado Health Insurance Affordability Enterprise Board. Peak Health Alliance partners with an insurance provider to provide health insurance in nine Colorado counties, including Grand.

5 years ago: One person missing after early morning fire guts Winter Park condo building
One person remains unaccounted for after a fire at a condominium complex in Winter Park left the building badly damaged and closed surrounding roads early April 13, 2020. Around 3 a.m., East Grand Fire and Grand Fire responded to a fire at Braidwood Condominiums on Lions Gate Drive. According to authorities, the blaze started on the second floor and flames were visible upon their arrival. The fire quickly spread to the top floor and engulfed the building. The complex houses 12 condos on multiple stories above parking on the first level. According to East Grand Fire Chief Todd Holzwarth, the complex was built in the 1980s and didn’t have modern fire suppression systems to keep the flames from spreading. (The body of the missing person was later found.)

10 years ago: Grand Lake trustees approve transfer of Grand Lake Elementary building
After months of discussion, the transfer of the Grand Lake Elementary School building was approved by the Grand Lake Board of Trustees in a 6-1 vote April 13, 2015. The school became vacant after the East Grand School District Board of Education voted to close the building in 2011. In the motion approving the sale, the board also approved the creation of a committee to explore setting up an enterprise for the school building, develop a business plan and direct further building uses.

90 years ago: Grand Lake, Hot Sulphur tie in first baseball game
The weather finally allowed a practice baseball game in Grand County on April 14, 1935. Four innings were played to a 2-2 tie between Grand Lake and Sulphur at Hot Sulphur Springs. Grand Lake only had six men with them, so some of the Sulphur men filled the visitors’ vacancies. Rex Pleasant pitched for the Sulphur team and Barney McLean threw for the visitors. With the interest shown, the prospects look bright for Sulphur to have a championship team this year. A baseball benefit dance was also scheduled for April 20.

110 years ago: Mugrage Ranch sold in western Grand County
Mr. Harry H. Johnston, the local manager of the Farmers Life Insurance Co. and for years a prosperous ranchman in the Radium district, has by a recent transaction come into possession of the Charles H. Mugrage ranch in the western part of the county. This ranch is regarded as one of the most promising and desirable ranches in that section of the county, and Johnston’s own ranch adjoins it. Now that the two ranches are combined, it makes Mr. Johnston’s possessions in that community one of the choicest estates in western Grand County.
