Toy robot loses to bomb-squad robot in Denver standoff

DENVER (AP) – It was toy robot vs. bomb-squad robot. Toy robot lost after a two-hour standoff in downtown Denver.

Police called out the bomb squad Wednesday afternoon after a report of a toy robot cemented to a pillar of a footbridge. A bomb-squad robot took pictures of the toy and after a couple hours, an officer wearing protective gear attached a small explosive to the toy.

The plastic toy exploded into several bits.

Police spokesman Matt Murray tells The Denver Post that while the bomb squad doesn’t automatically respond to all suspicious objects, the robot was strange enough to warrant a call.

Murray says in the end, the incident turned out to be “a whole lot of nothing.”
