FRASER — Join Headwaters Trails Alliance, Sprout Foundation and the Town of Fraser as they clean up the community this Saturday, Sept. 7, to promote the Healthy Headwaters Campaign. The Campaign is aimed at educating both residents and visitors of the importance of the headwaters of the Colorado River, a water source for more than 35 million people.

According to Maura McKnight, Headwaters director, there has been a significant amount of trash accumulating in and around town, especially along heavily used trails. “We worked with AmeriCorps in March to do some spring cleaning, and we ended up filling six commercial-sized trash bags,” said McKnight. McKnight applied to the Sprout Foundation, a donor-advised fund of the Grand Foundation, to fund the cleanup and education efforts of the Campaign. Sprout Foundation has funded new bear-proof trash receptacles, dog waste stations, and the new educational signs along popular Fraser trails.

Headwaters Trails Alliance is asking for volunteers to meet at noon on Saturday, Sept. 7, at the Headwaters office, 120 Zerex Street (Highway 40), in Fraser. Work is expected to last two to three hours, but volunteers are urged to join for as little or as long as possible. “If we all pitch in, even just a little, it makes a huge difference,” McKnight said. Volunteers will receive a T-shirt featuring U.S. Forest Service’s Woodsy the Owl with his “Give a hoot, don’t pollute” message, other gifts and adult- and kid-friendly beverages.
