Training fire planned for Thursday near Grand Lake

The Sulphur Ranger District will be sponsoring a one-tenth acre training fire near the Idleglenn Staging Area off of Highway 34 on Thursday, June 24. The burn will be used as an exercise for approximately 17 students from multiple agencies in Grand County.

Sixteen additional fully trained firefighters will be assisting with the training as well as three fire engines and two water tenders. Smoke may be visible from Highway 34, Shadow Mountain Reservoir and the Grand Lake area.

The classroom portion of the interagency training is sponsored by Grand County, Grand Lake Fire and the Forest Service. Classroom activities begin today and will conclude with the training burn on Thursday. Participants will learn about fire fighting techniques, safety and fire behavior.
