Udall visits Afghanistan, says US on right track
May 25, 2009
Colorado Sen. Mark Udall has gone to Afghanistan to meet with Afghan leaders and American commanders, and he says the U.S. is “on the right track” with its new military and civil tactics there.
Udall spoke with reporters by phone Monday, two weeks after President Barack Obama replaced the American commander in Afghanistan in hopes of better confronting an energized insurgency.
Udall, a Democrat, says he’s still in the region but can’t say where because of security reasons.
He says the new U.S. approach will try to build up civil society and improve security as well as kill insurgents.
Udall says increasing the number of U.S. troops in Afghanistan will also lessen the need for air strikes, which the Afghan government complains have killed innocent victims.
