Update on manhunt in Winter Park

Sky-Hi News Staff Report

According to a press release sent from the Fraser Winter Park Police Department,  on the afternoon of September 14, the (FWPPD) was contacted by a member of the Broomfield Police Department regarding two identity-theft suspects who were enroute to the Winter Park area.

Officers were informed that the suspects had a hotel room near the Winter Park Resort and were returning to the hotel after committing numerous crimes in the Denver area.

It was reported that the suspects were driving a silver Dodge Neon with no visible license plates. FWPPD officers were also told that the suspects may possibly be in possession of a firearm stolen from a law enforcement officer’s vehicle.

Officers confirmed that the suspects had in fact rented a room at the Vintage Hotel and set up at the hotel with the intent of taking them into custody when they arrived.

At about 6:30 p.m., the vehicle was spotted coming down Berthoud Pass, and subsequently went to the parking lot of the motel. It then decided to leave the area at which time FWPPD and Colorado State Patrol Officers attempted to complete a traffic stop on it. The vehicle fled eastbound on US Hwy 40 with CSP and FWPPD officers pursuing.

At approximately mile marker 234, the Colorado State Patrol executed a tactical intervention technique on the vehicle, causing it to spin out of control and leave the highway, rolling down an embankment and coming to rest on its wheels.
Both suspects then fled the scene on foot, running into a heavily wooded area. A 17-year-old female from Colorado Springs subsequently surrendered and was taken into custody on a felony warrant out of Westminster for Aggravated Motor Vehicle Theft. She was transported by ambulance to the Middle Park Medical Center for treatment and subsequently released into law enforcement custody.

An extensive ground search by the Grand County Emergency Response Team and K-9 teams for the male suspect yielded negative results. Authorities will continue searching the area during daylight hours on Thursday, Sept. 15.

The vehicle in question was later found to be stolen out of Colorado Springs. It was impounded pending evidence processing.

The following agencies assisted with this investigation and subsequent search: Colorado State Patrol, Grand County Sheriff’s Office, Summit County Sheriff’s Office, Granby Police Department, Kremmling Police Department, United States Forest Service, Grand County Emergency Medical Services, East Grand Fire Department, and security staff from the Winter Park Resort.

The investigation is continuing in an attempt to identify and apprehend the male driver.
