Valentine’s Day: Readers can star in their own custom romance

Wouldn’t it be nice to get away, just you and the man/woman of your dreams this Valentine’s Day?

What about if you could get away, just you and the man/woman of your dreams, to the place you’ve always wanted, when you wanted, without much more hassle than turning the page of a book? can make that dream trip come to you, allowing you to be the star of your own adventure romance and escape a little bit. The concept is also a good idea as a gift for your sweetheart, even as a wedding gift for friends (gift certificates available). There’s even an option to add a photograph to the cover ($25).

The book’s uses are as vast as the themes to choose from for the storyline. Each soft- or hardback is personalized with more than 25 details about “the starring couple” put together from an online questionnaire.

Customers simply enter items like names, hometown, workplaces, eye and hair color, best friends, favorite scent/perfume/cologne and music, affectionate nicknames for one another, and how long the couple has been together. For a some flexibility, singles can pick the perfect mate they create or their favorite film, music or other celebrity.

Mild stories the company describes as “huggy-kissy,” while it offers a “sexy-sweaty wild” version to take the chill off as well. customized adventure romances offer to take readers to 24 different settings, from the Caribbean islands to dude and ski lodges.

Once a title is selected, the main characters could be doing anything from frolicking under a waterfall to skinny-dipping in the Caribbean. Along with looking deep into each other’s eyes they will encounter danger and mystique. Adventures include chasing bad guys on wave runners off the U.S. coast, foiling a stalker on a cruise ship, running into a mountain cougar, confronting black pearl thieves in Tahiti, and braving a snow storm and avalanche.

Company founders are Kathy Newbern and J.S. Fletcher, a husband and wife writing team out of Raleigh, N.C. They have been creating novels since they met and fell in love in 1992. Last year, they released their 16th book, “Negril Everlasting,” set at a couples resort in Jamaica.

“We’ve been dubbed computerized cupids,” said Fletcher, who has written two of the company’s top sellers: “Island of Love” set in Tahiti and “Another Day in Paradise.” He said it’s a “great job title,” and that doing the “undercover research,” he added, “is half the fun.”

Other new titles include’s debut historical “High Seas Romance” by Jennifer Price and its first detective novel, “Missed Tryst” by Geno Vencenzo. Other authors include Marcy Thomas whose book “Rome: Diamonds, Danger and Desire” is also one of the company’s top sellers.

The amount of time it takes to receive a book once the details and orders have been placed is about one week for a paperback. Hardback custom books take 10 days to two weeks to receive.
