Visa limits will hurt Colorado ski areas

To the Editor:

I read your recent article regarding H2B visas. I work for a

company that sends student workers to the U.S. under the H2B, J1 and Q visa programs.

What many people do not know is that the State Department has put new term limits on the J1 visa, which is by far the most used at ski resorts. This year (2007/2008) they imposed a March 15 deadline on the final date for the student work and travel program.

This severely hurts our ability to promote our services to small and large companies in the U.S. Our company, based outside the states, is in no position to petition for change to the new policy.

I would be interested to see the reaction from local politicians when they find out about these new limits and how much it hinders local employers in hiring international seasonal employees. Our agency was told by the regional

U.S. consulate that they would be open to feedback in regard to this new policy.

Unfortunately, due to high turnover at the lower level departments at the consulate, we have no way to get beyond the basic e-mail response and brush off. I have spoken with a few people in the industry, and it appears that the only recourse will be from a lobby group in the tourism industry. I would be interested in your thoughts

on this.
