Von der Heiden – Friday Night Dinners are set to begin
To the EditorThe free Annual Friday Night Dinners at the Cranmer Memorial Chapel in Winter Park get under way on Thanksgiving Day starting at 4:45 p.m. It will be the Traditional Turkey Feast with members of St. John’s Episcopal Church hosting. We are celebrating our 14th year of sharing food and fellowship having served 18,500 meals and hugs over all this time – pretty awesome. It takes a great number of people to make this happen: Advocates, Church of Eternal Hills, Fraser Valley Lions Club, Lady of the Snow Roman Catholic Church, Lord of the Valley Lutheran Church, Mountain Family Center & Winter Park Christian Church. Each of the organizations hosting provides the sides, desserts and servers for that meal. Grand County Jewish Community, Winter Park Resort and YMCA of the Rockies each provide the whole cooked meal along with servers. Safeway provides the apple juice for the season. Gifts of monies pay for the main course and paper goods with co-ordinators Jim Magill & Joan Von der Heiden cooking the main course. Ken Von der Heiden delivers meals to the shut-ins.Some of these wonderful meals consist of baked chicken with wild rice; Ham with mashed potatoes; sausage with Spanish rice; rigatoni with salad; meatloaf with fries; roast pork and baked beans; corned beef dinner, etc.The dates for this season are: Nov. 24, Dec. 2, 16 and 30; Jan. 13 and 27; Feb. 10 and 24; Mar. 9 and 23; April 6. We start serving at 4:45 p.m. and finish at 7:15 p.m. These Fridays are opposite payday dates of Winter Park Resort, the area’s largest employer. Can’t tell you how grateful our diners are; particularly at this time of the year when they go to work but are sent home because there aren’t enough clients to be served. The stories of empty stomachs, cereal dinners or how do I pay the rent after an accident are numerous. Our sincere thanks to each of you who participate. We all agree that we receive more than we give on any given evening. If you are interested in volunteering or would like a meal delivered give Joan Von der Heiden a call at 726-5189. If you would like to donate to this program please send a check to St. Johns Episcopal Church, POB 947, Granby Co. 80446 and memo it: Cranmer Dinners. The door is open to ALL so come and join the camaraderie either by helping or looking for a good meal.Joan Von der Heiden
