Watts: The government is here to first; “provide for the common defense”
The government is here to first; “provide for the common defense”
Much is currently being said about the flood of “migrants” coming into this country. The compassionate folks say that it is our country’s duty to help those unfortunate folks. They quote scripture and are apparently caring people. As a compassionate or Christian American it would seem to be in our nature and duty to help the unfortunate. Are you racist or bigot if you object?
Most of us, who have the means, contribute time and money to those in need here and abroad via our churches, clubs and non-profits. As a nation we give aid to disasters throughout the world. We give aid to many countries and causes throughout the world. But we often get aggravated when the Government gives our tax money to unfriendly states or causes, allows potentially dangerous people to enter our country or allows illegal or refugee entry while others stand in line to enter legally.
So how do we distinguish between compassion and wisdom for migration. I would submit that there are two answers to this question – one a personal/individual answer and another for our government.
As individuals we should give of our time and money to help those we know to be in need. As a nation however our government should hold the narrower interest of our own people in mind and action while separating religion from state. Biblical scholars indicate that no where in the bible does it say that the government should provide for the poor – it is left to we the people. According to our constitution, the government is there to first; “provide for the common defense”, and secondly to “promote the general welfare” . Thus it would seem that allowing mass migration of refugees (legal or illegal) is likely to do neither – rather it will increase the risk of terrorism and take jobs away from our unemployed. Such mass migration is likely to endanger and impoverish our citizens and the poorest among us will be most damaged.
Migration without assimilation is invasion!
