By a 6-1 vote, the West Grand Board of Education hired Todd Bittner to serve as high school principal for 2010-2011.

Bittner is dean of the high school. He will replace Phillip Bonds who announced his retirement in January after seven years in that position.

The opening was posted internally. A committee of administrators, teachers, parents, a board member and a students interviewed two candidates on March 1. Following those discussions, the committee recommended Bittner for the position.

Board member Dean Billington tallied the sole vote against hiring Bittner because, he said, he did not have enough information to make a decision.

Bittner will serve in two roles, both as principal and guidance counselor while he finishes earning his masters in school administration from the University of Colorado-Denver.

For his role as guidance counselor he will be paid $39,000. For his role as principal he will be paid $20,000.

Superintendent Kevin Chalfant was appointed Director of Learning Services and will fill any role that Bittner is unable to complete due to his lack of administrative certification, including teacher evaluations. Bittner has until March 2011 to receive his Colorado principal license.

In his role as dean, Bittner has worked in concert with the school administration on issues of discipline, development, school climate and informal observations.
