Wildfire limits access to John Martin Reservoir

CAMPO, Colo. (AP) – Access to John Martin Reservoir in southeastern Colorado is being limited in the aftermath of a large wildfire.

Park officials say the north boat ramp, the visitor center and boat inspection facility will be closed Monday while firefighters mop up hot spots.

The fire started Saturday near Las Animas and spread to about 11 square miles. It forced about a dozen homes to be evacuated on Sunday in Hasty along U.S. 50 but residents were allowed back later in the day.

Firefighters contained most of the blaze on Sunday, including the part burning in the John Martin Reservoir area.

In Baca County, a fatal rollover sparked a 3-square-mile wildfire northeast of Campo that destroyed a home, a fire truck and several outbuildings. Another home was damaged.

It was contained early Sunday.
