Head to the skatepark in Hideaway Park Saturday and plan to leave knowing a few new tricks.

The Yellow Designs stunt team will be at the park from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. to give lessons to skaters and BMX bikers of all skill levels and to show off a little bit themselves.

Yellow Designs is a BMX stunt team from Denver. They have performed in Grand County before at the Fat Tire Classic.

The Hideaway Skatepark Clinic will feature two sets of instruction – from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and from 1:30 to 2:15 p.m. The instruction is free and will include something for all levels.

At 1 p.m., the Yellow Designs stunt team will do a free demo of tricks and skills on skateboards and BMX.

“We’re hosting this event in direct response to what skaters have asked for,” said chamber executive director Catherine Ross. “The skatepark is a great amenity and it’s super popular. Kids use it all the time.

“But what I hear is that they really want to get better and this clinic will provide lessons to they can hone their skills.”

To get involved, sign up at the Fraser Valley Metropolitan Recreation District office, 216 Eisenhower Drive, or call (970) 726-8968. Get a free T-shirt if you sign up early.

The Hideaway Skatepark Clinic is the first of three big skatepark events this summer, hosted by the Winter Park/Fraser Valley Chamber of Commerce.

The second is the Concrete Rodeo skateboard competition on Aug. 6. It costs $25 to compete. Sign up now at the chamber office or call (970) 726-4118.

The third event will be Labor Day weekend, Sept. 5. The chamber, the Grand County Blues Society and the Sky-Hi Daily News will partner again for the second annual Teen High Altitude Battle of the Bands and Boards. Teen bands are encouraged to sign up now to compete by calling the newspaper at (970) 887-3334 ext. 19600 or e-mail

Bands will compete for prizes and the titles of Best Band, and Most Promising Musicians on guitar, bass, drums and vocals.
