Winter Park " Mary Jane look-a-like contest a mockery
To the Editor:
If you were looking for a no class, low budget, drag, teenage strip tease ” that was exactly the theme for this year’s winning contestants.
Over the years my friends and family have made a point to come celebrate the anniversary of the Jane and the birthday of its founder ” Miss Mary Jane. In good fun, we laugh and drink with the girls dressed up in Victorian, Burlesque and Cowgirl costumes tromping through the Club Car with spirit in hand.
However, this year, a bit of confusion in the air … there seemed to be a lack of coordination as the contest abruptly started an hour late with no announcement. The oh-so, ever-clueless judge (perhaps drunk) jumped on the mic, running through the Mary Janes as if time were of the essence. After a brief crowd applause for each lady (and gents) the judge carelessly nominated her top three picks.
The contest has always been in good taste and the contestants, or shall I say the winning contestants, have always been very classy. I do not know what the Winter Park ski area is trying to appeal to this year with promoting men in drag (for an obvious ladies event) and teenage girls dancing on the tables in nothing more than cheap underwear.
I must say I and many others were quite appalled and, well, actually disgusted. Mary Jane sold out.
With all the money spent in prizes (I heard well over $1,000) I do not see where the “Finest Mary Jane costumes” were rewarded, nor the public image met (I can just imagine what people think of Winter Park/MaryJane when they see men in drag and strippers publicized) … but I could be wrong?
To all the other ladies who spent the time and energy in GREAT costumes ” I applaud you.
