Winter Park: Three-day event raises funds for Sports Center for the Disabled
February 25, 2008
This weekend, the National Sports Center for the Disabled (NSCD) will hold its largest annual fundraiser, the Wells Fargo Cup, at Winter Park Resort.
This will be the 33rd year for the event, which stretches from Friday to Sunday.
The weekend festivities include four ski races, live entertainment, ice carving demonstrations and a large silent auction.
The Wells Fargo Cup and other corporate sponsors raise over $200,000 annually to support the NSCD, a sports program that offers summer and winter lessons and activities ” such as skiing, biking, rafting and camping ” for disabled athletes and participants. It is one of the largest outdoor therapeutic recreation agencies in the world.
NSCD teaches a variety of sports and activities to individuals with almost any physical, cognitive, emotional, or behavioral diagnosis.
On Saturday morning, the Frontier Cup Corporate Challenge involves amateurs of all skiing and snowboarding abilities to the slopes in a pro-am style event. Each race team consists of a top disabled athlete and five amateurs. Starts are handicapped so that every run is competitive.
Saturday afternoon is the Denver Post Celebrity Smackdown, a chance for Denver media personalities, mascots, former Broncos, cheerleaders and surprise celebrities to tackle the slopes where the “best fall” and the “worst dressed” win prizes.
Sunday’s premier ski race, the World Disabled Invitational, puts the best male and female disabled racers in the world on Lower Hughes Run, while competing for one of the largest cash prizes on the disabled racing circuit.
