Winter Park’s Wolf Park project receives award

Special to the Sky-Hi News

The Colorado Lottery awarded a 2014 Starburst Community Award on Tuesday, Nov. 4, to the Town of Winter Park for using Lottery funds to upgrade and revitalize Wolf Park.

The project was completed last November with help from a Lottery-funded Great Outdoors Colorado (GOCO) grant worth $122,990.

Wolf Park is one of Winter Park’s most popular neighborhood parks. A citizen advisory committee identified what elements to include in renovation plans.

The antiquated irrigation system was replaced and non-ADA compliant restrooms were renovated to include heat and electricity. The sloping play area was leveled and landscaped, swings were installed and a sunshade for parents was built. Visitation quickly increased upon completion of the project, as the renovation included fitness equipment along the Alpine Trail and interpretive signs identifying wildflowers, trees, birds and other animals.

The Colorado Lottery Starburst Community Awards recognize excellence in the use of Lottery proceeds in community projects implemented to enhance a community’s environment.
