The Women’s Club of Grand Lake will celebrate their 100th Anniversary in style on Thursday September 20. Members will attend a dinner at Daven Haven at 5 p.m., with special musical entertainment.

The Women’s Club of Grand Lake was founded in 1912 by Mary Lyons Cairns. First called the Ladies Sewing or Embroidery Club, its goal was to bring women together not only for social connections, but as a friendly and emotional support system.

The club was also active in the community, implementing many improvement projects to benefit Grand Lake. One project, which continues into the present day, is upkeep on the graves within the Grand Lake Cemetery. Each May, members meet to clean the cemetery grounds and place flags on the graves of veterans.

In 1933 the Women’s Club began the town library, collecting books and arranging for a librarian. They brought an opera program to the community in 1966, and greatly supported the start of the Repertory Theater in Grand Lake. These are but a few of the improvements wrought by the Women’s Club throughout the years.

“The history of the Women’s Club over the past 100 years is also the history of Grand Lake,” said Kathleen Means, Women’s Club member.

The Women’s Club is open to any women who wish to join, and always welcomes guests. Current membership includes nearly 70 women.
