Wright: Great Fitness Vacation Locations

Aloha! We are in Maui and loving every minute of it including our daily workouts. There are many great ways to get your workout while visiting Maui and I will highlight those for you this week. If you have been reading this column over the past three weeks, you will know that week one focused upon ten guidelines for choosing the best fitness vacation locations and last week we featured Colorado as the first location. The purpose of this series articles is not to choose spa vacations or recreation locations, but to choose locations that offer easily accessible fitness opportunities that you will actually do. And, since I always workout on vacation, I thought it would be fun to share my workout experiences with you during our trip this summer. As always, prior to beginning any exercise program, please consult your physician.
One of the wonderful aspects of staying in the Wailea/Kihei area is the shoreline walk/jog path easily accessible from most of the resorts which line the coast here. Beautiful vistas of the torquoise water, white sandy beaches and sunshine provide the ideal setting for your morning workouts. We were able to get a solid hour walk/run on the path and then drop into the health club for our weight training/core/flexibility segment of the workout. I also always bring along resistive tubing to use in the room supplementing my weight training workouts. It is lightweight and easy to pack.
There are also fitness classes offered at our resort which provides a change from the walk/run workouts and most resorts here offer varied formats so there is something for just about everyone.
Most of these beach communities have amazing cycling paths, albeit hilly terrain, with spectacular views to enjoy while you workout. If you are up for an intense workout, you can attempt to cycle/hike the road to Haleakala Crater with 33 switchbacks and a view of over a hundred miles on a clear day. You can also take on the cycle trip inside the crater, but your fitness level needs to be up for a significant challenge. Of course there are tons of golf courses and tennis courts, but make certain that these activities will serve as a bona fide workout and not just recreation if you intend to substitute these for a more structured workout.
There are many state parks all over the island and you can pick a different one daily creating a circuit for yourself on the beach using the ocean, the beach sand and your own body weight for a fantastic workout.
You can even set up a triathlon of sorts by swimming, followed by cycling and then a run to top it off since you have easy access to all three modes of exercise on this incredible island paradise. And, after a great workout, you can really enjoy your day!
