Young man swept away in Colo. River
July 23, 2010
RIFLE, Colo. (AP) – A search is set to resume Friday for a young man missing in the Colorado River.
He and three others had been swimming in the river east of Rifle Thursday afternoon, using a rope swing over the water. Authorities say he hit the river’s surface on his side while swinging on the rope, apparently knocking the wind out of him.
Bystanders tried to rescue him but he panicked and was swept away. Law enforcement officers and firefighters lined the riverbank to look for the man but were unable to spot him.
The Garfield County sheriff’s office says the rescue mission is now a recovery operation.
