@ your library: The Joy of Summer Reading

Welcome to long warm days and the notion of Summer Reading — choosing books for the sheer pleasure they afford. Whether you like romances, mysteries or adventure, it is liberating to indulge your choices and follow where your fancy leads.

The Grand County library has resources for suggesting new titles as well as helping you locate the work of your tried-and-true favorite authors. If you are online, go to library website, http://www.gcld.org and search under the tab Books and More — Readers Advisory Tools. There you will find information on the best sellers or the latest book in your favorite series, complete with the covers, reviews and a detailed synopsis. Have fun with general search terms like: “summer,” “beach,” or “hot,” and you will be rewarded with book title suggestions such as: “Killer Summer,” by Ridley Pearson, “One Summer,” by David Baldacci, and “One Crazy Summer” by Rita Williams-Garcia.

If you enjoy non-fiction, one of this summer’s most popular reads is “Let’s Explore Diabetes with Owls” by bestselling author David Sedaris. This hilarious collection of essays covers everything from the perils of French dentistry to the eating habits of the Australian kookaburra.

For all you crafters, (a notoriously industrious bunch), summer is a wonderful time to get a jump start on projects for Christmas gifts. Believe it or not, Christmas is less than 6 months away and craft stores are already putting out their supplies for holiday crafts. The Grand County libraries have many craft books, including new acquisitions such as The Big Book of Crafts and Activities, by D.K. Publishing, Inc. and The New Tunisian Crochet: Contemporary Designs for Time-honored Traditions, by Dora Ohrenstein.

Summer reads and reading for pleasure is the idea behind the GCLD Adult Summer Reading Bingo — now in its fourth year. Running from June 1 to August 16, you can join a community of readers who pledge to read five Groundbreaking Reads in the assortment of genres found on the bingo card. All the titles are available at your library or online at http://www.gcld.org. Have a great time, try out some new books, and get your name entered in a drawing for a free Kindle Paperwhite e-reader. Sign up and grab a “bingo” form at your nearest GCLD library branch

In addition to the traditional print form, more and more titles are found in e-book format and on audio download. Download several titles onto your mobile device and take them on vacation without adding the extra weight. Or, choose titles from the audio CDs collection at the library to share while on a road trip or commuting back and forth to work. Whatever you choose, choose to have a blast @ your library!
