Yvonne Kowalczewski: concentration camps were created and operated by Germany
June 7, 2012
To the Editor:
First of all, I would like to thank Allen Hillje for his service to this country. Having said that, it is disappointing that a Marine would be so misinformed about history as evidenced by his referring to Auschwitz and Birkenau being “of Poland.” The concentration camps of World War II were created and operated by Germany in occupied Poland. The first victims were Polish Christians. Ultimately, the Germans murdered equal numbers of Polish Christians and Polish Jews. In the interest of historical accuracy and to clarify who were the victims and perpetrators of these war crimes, please correct this error.
