Zack Peterson’s family thanks Grand County community

To the Editor:

This letter is to our friends and neighbors and all the citizens of Grand Lake and Grand county.

Just to update everyone on Zack’s (Peterson) condition: Most importantly, he is alive and that alone is a miracle. The car is demolished and seems impossible that anyone came out of it alive. He has some minor abrasions and bruises but he cracked some ribs and collapsed both lungs.

This has been very painful and they have drain tubes inserted for fluid and blood. He may get those out soon. He fractured two vertebrae between his shoulder blades and bruised the spinal column, which has left him without any feeling below the belly button. The blessing is that the spinal cord was not severed so there is still the possibility that some miracle could happen.

Zack is in remarkably good spirits, understands his condition, knows he has a long road ahead, and we’ve never been prouder or more impressed by him.

First we would like to thank the men and women of the Grand Lake Fire Department, Grand County EMS, Grand County Sherriff Department, the Colorado State Patrol, and the Flight for Life crew. Without all of you, our son would probably have died, and this is a debt we can never repay. It took over an hour to extract Zack from the vehicle and we were very impressed with the professionalism and care that was shown to us and Zack. If you ever find yourself in need of emergency help, know that you will be in good hands.

Now to all the people of Grand Lake, Grand County, and our friends elsewhere: It is said that you reap what you sow. It is incredible that Suzi, Zack, and I sowed this many seeds. The outpouring of help, prayers, food, gifts, visits, calls, e-mails, cards and letters has truly been overwhelming. You have buoyed our spirits at a time when we all needed it. I never knew that the human body could hold so many tears but your support has helped us through each day. We will forever be thankful to you all and eternally in your debt. We now know, more than ever, why we moved to Grand Lake and Grand County.

For updates on Zack’s progress, we have set up a Care Page. Go to You have to register but it is free. His Web page is “zackpeterson” and you can post comments for him if you would like. We will update that site frequently.

Thank you again.

Suzi, Jim, and Zack (the miracle boy)
