A crossroad far from Kremmling

Larry Ebersole / Kremmling Crossroads
Kremmling, Colorado

Moving on is a simple thing – what it leaves behind is hard. A simple enough line in a song that until recently was nothing more than that to me, a line in a song. Things tend to change and suddenly that simple line is my entire world in so many ways.

This new world has come to be through what can best be explained as a rare form of leukemia, which will require treatment. The rare form is code for the unusual attributes of my illness that are going to take some time to understand.

I say “my illness” with the conviction of whatever ownership I can grasp in this situation. In the sense that it is mine, my family and I have decided to take this fight to a battlefield of our choosing, putting us closer to the support of our families back in Kansas. In an effort to quit babbling, the point is I don’t feel well and I am going home.

Having to leave here feels like getting shot in the gut, but I intend to survive so this is something we have to do. I have one more column in me for next week, so maybe I will be sentimental by then. Fortunately I am able to write this instead of actually saying any of this out loud.

Much of my battle strategy has come from watching my dogs’ complete surrender in the war with the ground squirrels. While they soaked up a rare appearance of the sun the other day I actually watched a bird land on the backside of one of the sleeping warriors while the other one let an enemy critter run up and over it. I am sure it was on the way to build another nest in one of our vehicles. I won’t surrender so easily or completely.

One of the best friends man’s best friends could ask for is the Grand County Pet Pals. The 11th Annual Doggie Drag is coming up on Saturday, Aug. 29. The 2K and 5K events will take place at Grand Park in Fraser. Registration will begin at 9 a.m. Along with running or dragging, depending on your dog, there will be a silent auction, exhibits and more. This Pet Pals fundraiser supports their mission of responsible pet ownership and providing of spay and neuter programs for animals at the animal shelter and in the community. Participation is per person as most dogs have no money, so $20 in advance or $25 that day will get you in. All the details can be found at http://www.gcpetpals.org.

Don’t just sit around waiting for the Doggie Drag – get out and enjoy the Middle Park Fair and Rodeo Aug. 3-9.
