Cathy Walton-Smith – This mud season shall pass, too

Cathy Walton-Smith / View from the Lake
Grand Lake, CO Colorado

Here I am on Wednesday, at least for awhile. My former home in the Monday paper no longer exists. For, as you may already know, the Monday paper has been temporarily suspended. The ratio of news vs. ads in any newspaper is the basis for it’s viability, and these economic times are taking a hard toll on all of our local businesses, including this newspaper. I am optimistic that as we pass through mud season and on into our summer tourist season, things will pick up and there will once again be a Monday paper. Meanwhile, look for me every other Wednesday, as this space will have to be shared with another columnist.

The 9Health Fair is coming back to Grand County, to be held at West Grand High School in Kremmling on April 10, at Granby Elementary School in Granby on April 17 and at the Fraser Valley Elementary School in Fraser on April 24. With many locals not being able to afford health insurance and a majority of others with high deductibles, this is an important event for our community. Take advantage of more than 20 free and low-cost health screenings and education. You can save some time and paperwork by pre-registering online at http://www.9healthfair.org.

The Grand Lake Women’s Club will meet at 1 p.m., Thursday, April 15, at the Fire Station. Someone from the Grand County Council on Aging will be presenting the program. All women are welcome to attend.

Cabin fever is a common term for a claustrophobic reaction that takes place when a person is isolated and shut in, with nothing to do, for an extended period. Symptoms include restlessness, irritability, irrational frustration with kitchen appliances, forgetfulness, laughter, excessive sleeping, distrust of anyone they are with, and an urge to go outside even in the rain, snow or dark. Does that sound like you or anyone you know? It’s time again for Cabin Fever Follies. Shake off those “mud deason” blues by coming to watch your friends and family ply their talents on the stage at 7 p.m., April 24 at the Grand Lake Community House. Adults $15, youth under age 12, $8. Tickets are on sale at the Grand Lake Art Gallery or online at http://www.grandartscouncil.com. Don’t miss this wonderful and funny talent show. You may also purchase an ad in the program by calling me at 970-531-3055.

The Grand County Business Economic Development Associaton is providing a ‘Writing for the Internet’ workshop from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. on Thursday, April 15 at the Granby Library. The fee is $25, and you must pre-register by Tuesday, April 13. For more information, go online to gcbeda.com.
