Cyndi Palmer: All of Grand County is a stage

Sky-Hi Daily News

Some kids grew up with a sandbox ” I grew up with a soapbox.

I didn’t physically set up something to stand on (although I am vertically challenged), but I had plenty to say about what I stood for.

I grew up in Hot Sulphur Springs, surrounded by the beauty of the river, forest and mountains. I was inspired and developed a connection to all things artistic.

I began painting at a young age and have been engrossed in collage since 1992.

I’ve also been a thespian, published poet, avid reader and movie watcher, have an ear for a wide variety of music, and have more than a decade of culinary experience.

So, I stand before you today with great pleasure, having been given the opportunity to perch on this metaphorical street corner and share the hottest things to do in Grand County.

Hear ye, hear ye, ladies and gents . . .

Grand County Newspapers presents All Access, a Sky-Hi Daily News Friday special insert completely dedicated to arts and entertainment.

And there’s no better time. The county is a cultural mecca just waiting to share its experiences and to tap all your senses.

I knew we had art, but once I began seriously compiling for this first edition of All Access, I was truly amazed and really proud of what our little piece of the country has to offer.

I had no idea just how creative this place is.

Around every bend are celebrations, things to do and see. There are also dozens of authors and writers, artists (including some incredible painters and sculptors), musicians and bands, actors, and chefs and brewmasters to tempt your palette.

It is my hope to be able to highlight these assets, to be “the eyes and ears of this institution, my friends” (if I may borrow a line from one of my favorite movies, “The Breakfast Club”). I want to take this bull by the horns and go for a wild ride.

Check out each Friday to see what events are gathering the community together, what’s new out in galleries and museums and on bookshelves and restaurant tables, and where the nightlife gets its groove on.

It will all be here.

What events out there in the arts world would you like to see coverage?

I encourage anyone to give me a shout-out by e-mail or phone to help me get the news out to residents and visitors.

I can be reached by e-mail at or by phone at (970) 887-3334 ext. 19605.
