Experience of a Lifetime: Witnessing surgery firsthand
Special to Sky-Hi Daily News
Watching a Dr. Tralla perform a sinus surgery in the operating room at Kremmling Memorial Hospital was the most memorable experience as the public relations manager for the hospital that I have had to date.
“Get prepped for surgery,” he told me with a smile.
I knew this was my chance to get up-close pictures of an experienced surgeon practicing his craft. I have been meaning to get permission to take these pictures for years now, knowing that the photos could provide an insiders look at our surgical department. Especially since I realize that many people aren’t aware of the procedures and surgeries performed locally, I knew I had to seize this opportunity.
I adjusted my lenses and stepped across the red line and into the operating room ” a place of absolute medical professionalism, precise communications, pristine sanitation and thorough knowledge.
I took pride in being allowed in this room as it is something even medical students look forward to experiencing early in their studies.
As I zoomed my camera lens in for my first shot I got a hint of what it must be like to be part of the surgical team at Kremmling Memorial Hospital. Their every action exemplified total professionalism. I was impressed with what I was witnessing.
I was there to observe a sinus procedure, approved by the FDA in 2005, called Balloon Sinuplasty®. It utilizes small, flexible devices that enter through the nostrils. A balloon gently opens narrow sinus passages much like angioplasty for the heart used in cardiology. It opens up the sinus cavities to allow for more effective mucus drainage. It’s one of the many procedures Dr. Tralla performs in the operating room at Kremmling Memorial Hospital, among tonsillectomies, ear tube placements and surgery of the ear, nose and throat.
“My patients have had great success with this procedure,” Dr. Tralla said as his steady hands with over 30 years experience meticulously performed what he had trained them to do so well. He explained what he was doing both verbally and while directing my attention to the CT monitors. I was impressed and I hoped I could capture a photo to do justice to the situation.
The hour and a half passed with lots of incredible pictures. I was in awe at what I got to observe and photograph. But it was nothing unusual to Dr. Tralla and the team of surgical specialists.
“It’s what I do,” he said simply.
Thanks to specialty physicians who visit Grand County, usually on a monthly basis, we can have many procedures done right here. This can also means that recovery and even rehabilitation can be done locally”saving time and money.
The Surgical Department at Kremmling Memorial Hospital has the technology and talent to accommodate many procedures. Dr. Medina, General Surgeon can perform hernia repairs, gallbladder removals, tubal ligations as well as others.
Dr. Bomberg and Dr. Sarin work on shoulders, knees, hands and feet while Dr. McCaulley performs colonoscopies and EGDs. Dr. Sulentich, Dermatology/Plastic Surgeon can perform some medical and even cosmetic surgeries. Dr. VanOveren and Dr. Childs handle issues of the bladder and prostate.
All of these doctors are available to us at least once a month for consultation at the Kremmling Memorial Hospital Specialty Clinic.
