A Sip of Logic

“Indeed, the probabilities at that the more insincere the man is, the more purely intellectual will the idea be, as in that case it will not be coloured by either his wants, his desires, or his prejudices.” -The Picture of Dorian Gray, Oscar Wilde

How can an idea stem from something that has absolutely no sincerity or no personality behind it? Is it accurate to say that true immaculate intellect is not tainted by any outside influence?

Nobody can answer that for certain because it is dependent on an individual’s opinion. But tell me, when was the last time you thought, made a decision, or came up with an idea that was not persuaded by your personality or emotions?

Every second, when a thought passes into our minds, it’s biased based on us. It’s human to have an opinion and it’s human to let that opinion drive our thinking and intellects.

That doesn’t mean that what Oscar Wilde says isn’t true. If you think about it, logically, intellect should not be muddied with prejudice or desires; otherwise it can’t be 100 percent accurate. Why? Because it has been molded by the influence of someone or something. Why isn’t that pure? Because the beauty of having human mentality is that the “correctness” of an idea is different from one person to the next. So is the only way to accomplish this “pure intellect” to eliminate individuality and personality from thought?

Probably. Because, as cynical as it sounds, personality deceives logic and emotions cloud reality, and that is the world our intellect festers in, a world of deception and ambiguity. But that’s not a bad thing. It helps us work together to evolve as a civilization and provides for variety.

For the sake of the holidays and human sanity, let us strive for variety and diversity rather than the perfect intellect. I hope everyone has a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! And in efforts to be politically correct, Happy Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Winter Solstice and Boxing Day!
