Grand County’s no different " a safety net can make all the difference

My Mom was a tiny, tiny lady; she stood 5 feet, 1 inch ” at least that was her claim. But she is the strongest person I’ve ever known.

Without a high school diploma, she successfully raised three sons and five daughters. She quit school when her father died so she could help support her younger siblings. Never in all the time she was raising us did she mutter a word of self pity or rail at the injustice of life … She was the strongest person I’ve ever met.

Our financial situation was fragile at best. We were one illness, one car repair, one unforeseen expense from our house of cards falling. It wasn’t from being lazy or unwilling to work. I remember Mom working two and three jobs when I was little to keep us clothed, fed and housed. Of course, I didn’t appreciate it at the time … I was just a kid.

More than once we needed help, and I’m thankful to this day for the programs that were there when we needed a helping hand. It wasn’t a handout, or charity; it was a safety net.

The programs were designed to be there when Mom had to decide whether to pay the electric bill or buy groceries, or they helped when she had to decide on rent or Christmas presents.

When a group of people asked to meet with me about a vision they had to start a program to benefit Mountain Family Center, I was all ears. As they told me about their vision I became more excited. Take a small donation and make it bigger … one person making a difference just by whom or what they know.

Grand Give represents a community coming together to help our neighbors who are struggling. Take a small donation, pair it with a business willing to double or triple their services, to make a bigger impact. A simple idea with a huge impact; a $50 donation turns into $150 worth of aide.

Take a look around. As prices rise the need in our community will become greater. Maybe you can’t give financially, but that’s OK, there are seniors who need firewood chopped or a lawn mowed.

The Mountain Family Center has list of items and services needed, many are low cost and many involve giving time or knowledge.

You can help; you can make a difference in someone’s life. You’ll be reading more about Grand Give in the days and weeks to come. Take a look at what you have or know and what your neighbors need ” and get involved.
