Guest opinion – Options for elder care in Grand County

Jean Fontius Cartwright, my mother, died peacefully in September, 2009, in the loving care of nurses. Yes, it was sad to see her go, but at 93 and with specific medical needs it was necessary for her to live in a place with a higher level of medical care. To this day I am glad that I was able to find a new home with the care she needed. And although making those decisions are sometimes resisted, (because it simply is not always fun to think about, not to mention it can be confusing), Mother and I choose to be optimistic and find the best quality of life situation possible.

Finding the most appropriate place for aging people to live mostly depends upon their level of needed medical care, but other factors such as levels of autonomy and degree of services provided are also important. I hope to be able to share some of the choices available for those people who might be thinking about living their lives with more services.

Retirement Living: This is the most independent type of living with limited responsibilities of home ownership or renting. Only limited maintenance or upkeep is necessary. Activities, planned events, meals and some transportation can be provided. There can be as much social interaction as one wants or needs. Large communities tend to be very appealing with this type of living because of the availability of more services.

Assisted Living: This is a more supervised way of living where additional services, medical and living, are provided. They can include three meals a day, medicine management, exercising, group activities and housekeeping and laundry services. Medical and shopping appointments can be provided by these homes as well as less frequent group social outings. There is a professional staff on duty at all times. Couples can live together where one is more in need of these services than the other. Smaller communities can be advantageous to this type of living since there can be a family atmosphere with less residents and more personalized services. Cliffview is our assisted living facility in Grand County and it is located in Kremmling.

Extended Care (Nursing Home): This is the most advanced type of care one can receive because of severe physical disabilities and/or medical diseases. Residents require complete assistance and supervision in all facets of daily living including transfers, dressing, bathing, cosmetic needs, meals and housekeeping and laundry services. Again, like assisted living, smaller communities tend to be advantageous over larger ones because of the family atmosphere and excellent professional staffing. Kremmling Memorial Hospital has beds that are allocated to extended care and is in Grand County.
