Kremmling " Fall is the time for flu shots

According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), the best time to get your flu shot is when the vaccine becomes available, usually in September or October. Unlike the past two years, an adequate supply of vaccine is now available.

“There does not appear to be supply limitations this year,” said Kym Colvin, hospital pharmacy consultant. Producers of the vaccination have upped production and improved quality due to issues occurring the past two flu seasons that delayed or even halted delivery of the vaccine. To further ensure that an adequate supply was delivered in time Colvin placed the order for this season in January.

“Now is the best time to immunize,” she said. The CDC recommends vaccinations continue through the fall and well into the winter because the timing and duration of influenza seasons vary.

Colvin recognizes that the decision to have a flu shot is a personal choice. However, as a mother and a registered pharmacist she believes firmly in the value of immunizations. “It’s one less thing to worry about,” she said.

People who should probably get vaccinated include children 6 months old to their 19th birthday, people 50 and older, those with chronic medical conditions, those who live in nursing homes and long-term care facilities, health care workers and caretakers.

“Those people in good health, between the ages of 20 to 49, and who are not immune system compromised, might not need the immunization,” said Colvin.

Visiting with a doctor is recommended for those not sure about whether to get vaccinated.
