Letter to the editor: Defining oligarchy amid Hands Off protests in Grand County

Melinda McWilliams
Fraser

I am responding to Debra Glen’s Sky-Hi News letter published on April 10 regarding oligarchies and Fraser protesters. An oligarchy is a form of government in which power rests with a small number of elite people, often of wealth and political influence. Throughout history oligarchies often rely on public obedience and oppression to exist.

The U.S., unfortunately, is currently demonstrating this concentration of elite wealth and political influence in our current presidency. Being wealthy and in politics or making political contributions does not necessarily make a person an oligarch unless he or she is using that personal wealth to buy exclusive access to or influence over political leaders.

Our group of Fraser protesters are all long-time residents who have worked in and/or contributed to our community. We are very well informed about our issues. We are protesting for everyone and everything in Grand County that is being negatively impacted by presidential executive orders and proposed actions including seniors, veterans, minorities, teachers, students, librarians, immigrants, school funding, local health care, local federal employees, local public lands and critical environments, local post offices and our local national weather service.

Our protests get mostly honks, waves, thumbs-up, cheers, and “thanks”.  The minority who oppose our messages are mostly crude giving us the finger or shouts of “f-you” or slurs.  This says something about the opposers.
