New Fitness Trends and Equipment for 2009

As we approach 2009, it is a good time to review new fitness trends and equipment that will enhance your workouts throughout 2009 and the coming years.
When deciding which fitness trends to follow and what equipment you may want to purchase, remember an important rule of thumb: If it seems too good to be true, it probably is, so avoid those trends and products. This week, we will cover a few fitness trends, such as small group training and various fitness class formats, and next week we will focus on new fitness equipment.
Small group training ” A great way to economically receive personal attention without the price of one-on-one training. Ask a couple of your friends or colleagues who share your interest in exercise to contact a certified and qualified personal trainer and set up a small group training program specifically for your group. There are dozens of ways to design a program to suit the needs of the group, but the key is that you each can meet on the same days, will commit to those sessions, and that everyone pays the same amount, up front.
Choose a trainer who is an expert at working with small groups as this is different than just attending a small group exercise class. The trainer should meet with each of you separately to perform a fitness assessment and consult with you on your specific health and fitness goals. The program design should take into account each of your individual needs and limitations and enable all of you to benefit equitably.
Boot Camp Style Training ” Boot Camp formats are varied but continue to attract all fitness levels and provide excellent health and fitness benefits. Make certain to choose a boot camp format that fits your health and fitness needs and limitations and to choose a certified/qualified instructor who is capable of teaching/coaching the class, not just yelling commands.
Pilates/Yoga Training ” Pilates and Yoga training will continue to be popular this year as well. The key is to choose an instructor who is thoroughly trained and certified in those disciplines, to safely and effectively guide you through the program. Keep in mind, that while there are dozens of benefits to this type of training, you still need to perform cardiovascular endurance training as well, so seek out walking, running, cycling, kickboxing, step and other types of aerobic workouts/classes to balance your program.
Fusion Classes ” There are many creative class formats available this coming year. Actually, some boot camp formats are a type of fusion class as cardio and weight training are blended. Cycling fusion classes with weight training circuits or Pilates/Yoga segments will be popular. Kickboxing Circuit classes are another fusion-concept class that blends kickboxing skills, non-stop for cardio training, as well as utilizing equipment during the class such as medicine balls, BOSU Balance Trainers, and stability balls, and the like to further challenge all major muscle groups of the body.
The key to choosing a complete fusion class is to check out the class design and make certain that there is at least 30-45 minutes of cardio training that truly elevates the heart rate into the target heart rate zone for effective calorie burning and that the weight-training segment is thorough enough to substitute for your weekly weight training sessions.
Next week, we will discuss new fitness equipment for 2009 and in the coming weeks more fitness trends such as virtual training.
