Opinion | Letter: Nothing to hide
I read with interest the Sky-Hi News Jan. 2 letter to the editor concerning “What is Mountain Parks Electric Hiding?” I, too, am an MPE member and a retired engineering manager with a career in independent power production. The Grand County resident’s letter largely questioned the upcoming MPE rate increase. As he indicated, a cooperative electric utility provider has a responsibility to all it’s customers to provide electric service in a cost effective and reliable manner. Additionally, he has every right to question the open and honest roles of the general manager and board of MPE. It is a valuable service to all of us for these questions to be asked when rate increases occur.
I appreciated these comments until his last statement: “If possible (he) would choose to have Xcel Energy provide (his) electric service rather than Mountain Parks Electric”. I find that to be absurd and for any MPE member to prefer Xcel Energy over a cooperative utility provider is insane. Where the letter referenced a multimillion-dollar boondoggle it should be noted that there are many past multibillion-dollar Xcel Energy boondoggles. Xcel’s rates are vastly unfair to their customer base and would far exceed MPE rates well beyond the upcoming rate increase. All Colorado public utilities are regulated by the Colorado Public Utility Commission. MPE rate increases are approved according to the State Commission’s policies as well.
Finally, for that reason everyone should realize, Mountain Parks Electric has nothing to hide.
