Tara Alatorre

Tara Alatorre joined Sky-Hi News as the editor in February 2023 after spending a year on sabbatical in Mexico. She graduated from Arizona State University with a bachelor’s degree in journalism and mass communication with a minor in global sustainability.

She spent over a decade covering a variety of news topics in Arizona as a freelancer with a strong focus on wildlife, water and outdoor issues. Her work as a freelancer earned her first place for  investigative journalism and third place for community service/journalistic achievement at the Arizona Newspaper Association’s 2016 Better Newspaper contest.

As the managing editor of The Foothills Focus from 2017-19, she increased the newspapers audience by creating meaningful content and gaining the community’s trust. While at The Foothills Focus she covered rural communities in Maricopa County that were grappling with drought and urban sprawl.

She grew up on a ranchito near Phoenix with her family, including her grandparents who immigrated from Chihuahua, Mexico, where she learned how to keep bees, garden, raise livestock, grow roses, climb trees and be a steward to the land. Her hobbies include hiking, admiring and identifying plants, reading, swimming, hot springing, eating tamales and enjoying the craft of fermentation.
