Fifth graders from Granby Elementary and Fraser Valley Elementary stepped into leadership roles this week during an immersive field trip to Young AmeriTowne: a hands-on program designed to teach financial literacy, civic engagement and community responsibility.

Student Mayor Janek Poh opened the town with a speech, and students immediately embraced their responsibilities. They budgeted, negotiated, served customers and made operational decisions. Through their roles, they reflected the rigor of Grand County schools and the character of the local community.

Through role-play in a simulated town, students learn how business, government and community intersect. However, the most memorable lessons came from observing how students leaned on each other in their mock community.

When businesses fell behind, classmates stepped in to help. Peers coached each other through math challenges, and students celebrated one another’s successes. These behaviors echoed the values woven throughout Grand County: resilience, service, responsibility and neighbor-to-neighbor care.

Both Granby and Fraser Valley Elementary Schools have long prioritized character development, problem-solving and leadership skills. The AmeriTowne field trip proved that those lessons extend far beyond the classroom, preparing students to become the future leaders of the valley.
