A wildfire four miles southeast of Mount Werner in Steamboat Springs has spread to 94.3 acres as of 8 p.m. on Sunday, according to real-time wildfire tracking platform WatchDuty.org.

The fire, just north of Rabbit Ears Pass on U.S. Forest Service land, was reported on the platform by WatchDuty Regional Captain Adam Johnson at around 12:30 p.m. and has since been dubbed the “Fishhook Fire.”

Steamboat Springs Fire Rescue posted an update on their Facebook page Sunday afternoon, noting that the Forest Service is responding and overseeing the incident.

“Thank you to everyone who called it in and please stay safe,” wrote SSFR.

While no official road closures or evacuations have been announced for the Fishhook Fire, members of the public should avoid recreating in the Rabbit Ears area, said Routt County Search and Rescue representatives. Campers should be prepared to evacuate if an order is given.

According to WatchDuty, Johnson reported the fire due to visible smoke on the Walton Peak Pano camera looking north. The camera was installed last summer through wildfire mitigation efforts by Xcel Energy, along with several other AI cameras throughout Routt County.

A pano camera on Storm Peak at Steamboat Ski Resort was installed earlier this year and is now operational, according to Steamboat Ski & Resort Corporation Director of Communications Maren Franciosi, who noted that resort representatives are getting a better view of the Fishhook Fire through the Walton Peak camera.

Another fire south of Stagecoach Reservoir, called the “Green Ridge Fire,” was reported shortly before 1:45 p.m. and has spread to 94.3 acres as of 8 p.m. Sunday., according to WatchDuty.

The Green Ridge Fire prompted evacuations for OC-522, OC-523, OC-528 and OC-536. The evacuation orders for OC-522 and OC-523 were pulled back to pre-evacuation status at around 6:30 p.m. on Sunday.

Residents in pre-evacuation zones are encouraged to pack their car, keep a full gas tank and orient their vehicle in the direction of leaving. Residents are also encouraged to stay vigilant of their surroundings and stay up-to-date with official information sources as conditions change.
