The Holiday Inn Express and Suites in Fraser is closed after a fire caused damage to part of the roof.

East Grand Fire responded to a call for a small fire in the building around 11:45 a.m. on Monday, April 14, said Fire Chief Todd Holzwarth.

No one was injured in the blaze, which started in the building’s attic space, Holzwarth said. The fire was contained by a sprinkler system in the attic.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, though Holzwarth said it appeared that the source was wiring in the roof’s heat tracing system.

“It’s really hard on that stuff to figure out because it’s designed to get warm,” he said. “It’s basically in a shorted out condition all the time.”

It appears that the fire smoldered for some time before smoke was visible through the building’s soffits.

The fire damaged some of the roof’s structural components, and some of the rooms below the fire suffered water damage from the sprinkler system, Holzwarth said.

A manager with Holiday Inn said it was unclear when the hotel would reopen.
