The Colorado Department of Transportation is warning motorists to prepare for possible bank slides on Berthoud Pass as a result of warming temperatures and heavy snow. The department is preparing for slides by positioning equipment and crews so they can respond quickly to slides.
Two slides took place on Wednesday, March 20, at mile point 237.5, which on the west side of the pass. No vehicles were involved in the slides.

In a press release from CDOT, it writes that bank slides along Berthoud Pass on U.S. Highway 40 are more challenging since traditional prevention methods are limited because of the rock fencing placed above the roadway. This fencing is designed to protect against falling rocks.
CDOT also tells motorists that if they encounter avalanche debris on the highway they should not drive through the debris and instead call emergency services for help while staying in their vehicle.
Crews and their equipment will be present throughout this week and weekend to clear small slides. Travelers are encouraged to slow down and drive carefully when crews are present.
