CARES program aims to enhance fire readiness five years after Troublesome Fire

To mark the five-year anniversary of the East Troublesome Fire, Grand County Emergency Management has launched a new volunteer initiative aimed at strengthening local disaster response and recovery efforts, according to a press release from the emergency management department.

The Grand County Community Assistance, Resilience, and Emergency Support program invites residents, businesses and seasonal community members to participate in a countywide network designed to enhance preparedness and resilience. The volunteer-based effort will help supplement services that mitigate, respond to and recover from all types of emergencies.

The program honors the spirit of unity that emerged during the 2020 East Troublesome Fire, when community members donated nearly $1 million in aid within the first week.

CARES is rooted in that same “neighbors helping neighbors” philosophy that continues to define Grand County’s recovery and strength. Registration does not commit participants to volunteer or donate, but it helps the county understand what skills, equipment and resources could be available in an emergency, according to the release.

When an incident occurs or additional support is needed, registered CARES volunteers will receive information and requests from the emergency management department. Engagement opportunities through the volunteer program include:

  • Neighborhood fire mitigation projects
  • Local disaster preparedness drills
  • Community outreach events
  • Emergency preparedness and hazard awareness classes
  • CPR training

Registration links, information packets, and FAQs are available through Grand County Emergency Management’s website.
