Even in Granby, the left wants to silence those with whom they disagree

To the Editor:
I had to laugh when I read Kathy Gilbertson’s letter regarding her dislike of William Hamilton’s Central View. Although she stated that she wanted to see only columns by “those people who can editorialize and opine about ways to make things better for our country without the slander, the innuendoes” of folks like Mr. Hamilton, what Kathy and many others (both inside the media and out) really want is for our press, both locally and nationally, to censor opinions the liberal left doesn’t agree with.
I find it truly unfortunate in our nation that we have a public which, for the last 16 years, has believed that someone’s personal charm and what they have to say are more important than the depth of that individual’s character. Clearly that happened with Bill Clinton, and the same thing is occurring now with Mr. Obama. While Barack has a way of communicating with people and presenting popular ideas, he has no clue how he is going to pay for all these programs. But, if past history is any indicator of future behavior, it will be at the expense of our national defense; something our country can ill afford.
In fact, we have to look no further back than Jimmy Carter to see that the emasculation of our country’s military to fund “feel good about ourselves” social agendas helped foreign terrorists gain a foothold in the world that we are still paying for with the blood of innocent Americans.
Ms. Gilbertson can call the “Central View” slander if she wants, but I know Bill, and also know that he would not have written about Obama’s past associations if they were not accurate. Just because someone doesn’t like the fact that a train runs through their yard every day doesn’t make it any less true.
More important is the idea that Barack Obama’s associations with the likes of William Ayers, Bernadine Dohrn, and Jeremiah Wright don’t have any impact on his current values. That would be akin to saying that our children don’t learn their values from their parents and friends. So, at a time when Mr. Obama was “hanging out” with and learning from socialists who had a very sincere desire to kill innocent people and disrupt our nation’s founding doctrine, John McCain and Bill Hamilton were making tremendous personal sacrifices by serving our country and fighting to ensure those doctrines remained viable for our future generations.
That by itself doesn’t mean that John McCain will be a good president, but it does give us an indication of the consistency of his personal character and what is important to him.
So in the end, what we are really dealing with is a desire to control freedom of speech which, by the way, is part of our Bill of Rights. Let’s do that Let’s forbid anyone from publishing ideas we don’t agree with. The next step will be our government taking over the media to enforce that censorship, which will in turn eliminate public accountability of our government, the real reason we have freedom of speech to begin with.
I don’t agree with many of the opinions I see expressed in our media , but I am willing to give my life to ensure that those opinions can be voiced.
