What started out as a seemingly harmless jump off a rock into the Upper Colorado River quickly turned into a potentially life-changing injury for Winter Park resident Beth Requist.

While on a rafting trip near Radium on Aug. 25, Requist, 27, suffered a severe back injury. She is currently in stable condition in a Denver hospital, surrounded by her friends and family. Her long-term prognosis is not known at this time.

According to her family and friends, the long-time Winter Park resident is a 2002 graduate of Clear Creek High School and works as a flight attendant for Southwest Airlines.

A group of Beth’s friends, under the leadership of Tyler Tomasello, has organized a 10K run/walk/ride benefit and silent auction in her behalf, which is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 24.

The 10K run/walk/ride portion of the event, called “B.E.T.H.” (an acronym for “Because Every Thing Helps”), will be held on the Fraser River Trail, according to Tomasselo, with “all proceeds going toward a speedy recovery for our friend Beth Requist.”

The event, scheduled to take place at Cooper Creek Square, includes a 10K run/walk/ride and a silent auction to help raise additional funds to assist her in her recovery.

Following the event, Winter Park Pub will be hosting an after party.

“Many local businesses are willingly offering their support,” Tomasello said.

The donor list includes: The Seven Sisters Grille; Earth Rocks; Powder Tools; Christy Sports; Smokin’ Mo’s; Be…Boutique; The Backcountry Grill; Emilie’s Tapas Bar; Deno’s Mountain Bistro; Ullr’s Tavern; The Pub; McConnell Printing; The Winter Park Competition Center; Pole Creek Golf Course; Bistro 28; Cooper Creek Square; Carlos and Maria’s; and the Winter Park Resort.

Event check-in and registration takes place from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. at Cooper Creek Square with the 10K taking off at 10 a.m. from the Square, heading across U.S. Highway 40, to the ski area and back.

The cost to participate in the run/walk/ride portion is $20. Those wishing to register online may do so at
